Edgar Allan Poe never had a fiancée who got engaged to another man. Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton was a childhood sweetheart, but lost contact with Edgar after he left for college. She eventually married another man. Many years later and one year before Poe's death, it was rumored that he, having lost his wife, and Sarah, now a widow, were engaged. But Poe died 10 days before they were supposed to get married.
